The Hills Are Alive With… Snow!

It’s happening folks, we are finally getting some serious snowfall collecting out there and this weekend’s forecast is looking pretty white too! For those of you who already have your skis/board waxed and ready to go, and your equipment packed in a bag by the door, this is the exact moment you have been anxiously awaiting. You’ve heard the hills calling your name and now they’re ready for you. It’s officially opening weekend for all three ski hills in Ontario’s Highlands!

Mother Nature has been very generous, the snow guns have been helping her out, and here we are, less than 24 hours away from the start of ski season. Where will you hit the slopes this weekend?

Sir Sam’s Ski and BikeHaliburton, On

No doubt there are a few of you that aren’t quite as prepared yet, and that is a-ok! Tune up for the season by getting your skis sharpened and waxed on site and pick up any last minute gear at the Algonquin Outfitters on location. Personally, my favourite part about skiing at Sir Sam’s is taking a ride to the top on their fully covered surface lift, which I like to call the Magic Carpet. This can only be seconded by their signature aprés ski; caesars and poutine. There’s nothing better than classic Canadian comfort foods after a day outside in the elements!

Last year marked the inaugural season for ski biking at Sir Sam’s. Yes you read that correctly, ski biking. Imagine a bike, with GT-like qualities and the potential to soar! If you’re looking for a true thrill, this should 100% be at the top of your winter bucket list this year.

Opening weekend: there will be three runs, three lifts and one snowboard rail open.

Calabogie Peaks – Calabogie, On

Known for having the tallest vertical drop of any ski hill in Ontario, Calabogie Peaks is a full weekend escape. With accommodations, a pub, a cafe and a restaurant onsite, there really is no need for you to leave the resort. My favourite part about skiing and staying with Calabogie Peaks is a tie between the hotel hottub (the perfect way to soothe those legs after a day of cold power squatting) and the local Calabogie Brewing craft beer on tap.

Check out the live mountain cams for realtime hill conditions or to search for your friends on the hill! Could you imagine if it caught an epic bail or two on camera? It’s pretty much reality tv.

Opening weekend: 2-3 runs will be open (check their website on day of for more information) as well as Black Donald’s Pub, Mountain Cat Cafe and Canthooks restaurant.

Mount Pakenham – Pakenham, On

Just a short drive from Ottawa, you’ll find Mount Pakenham tucked into the countryside. My favourite part about Mount Pakenham is the tubing hill! I have never laughed as hard as I did the day a group of eight friends (all of which were over the age of 25) went tubing here. We felt like carefree kids again and had an absolute blast spinning down the hill!

Throughout the season, check out the Ski Report on their homepage for up-to-date ski conditions, open runs and weather details. Oh, and don’t be alarmed if you catch a glimpse of a life sized penguin or bear running around. They mean you no harm and love a good high five!

Opening weekend: Two runs will be open!

Okay, confession time. If my ‘favourite parts’ haven’t quite given me away yet, I want to be completely honest with you all; I am not much of a skier. Regardless of my skill, I love heading to the ski hills, gearing up and giving it my best. Not only does it make for great people watching, but each ski hill has it’s own unique offerings and atmosphere, all of which are fun and friendly! I’d highly suggest skiing all of them this season.

Enjoy your weekend wanderings.
